Mobile PBX

Mobile PBX (or hosted MBX) is a new managed hosted PBX service that extends traditional fixed line PBX telephone system functionality to mobile devices such as mobiles telephones, smart phones and PDA devices by provisioning them for use as handset extensions. Mobile PBX services also can include fixed line phones.

Mobile PBX systems are different from other hosted PBX systems in that they simply forward data or calls to mobile phones by allowing the mobile phone itself, through the use of buttons, keys and other input devices, to control the PBX phone functions (such as transfer, hold etc) and to allow users to manage communications without having to call into the telephone system itself first.

Mobile PBX telephone systems are usually priced on a subscription basis per user per month and are relatively easy to set up due to limited amount of hardware needed.

11th May 2008

Verizon Business is planning to entering the mobile PBX market, saying it's got an easier route for business to add the capabilities it would like to provide.

They are planning to implement a software solutions from Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM, the makers of the Blackberry Devices). The software is designed to enable users on the system to operate on a single business number using only mobile handsets.

A business that already has a PBX server installed on its premises can add the mobile PBX capabilities. Features include having one phone number to ring all mobile and landline devices, the ability to seamlessly transfer a call from a fixed line to a wireless device, and a web portal allowing users to control and manage there devices.

The system is also incredibly flexible as users can add any mobile device to the PBX server regardless of the wireless network that it runs on.

In addition to converting from a hardware (it previous mobile pbx solution) to a software based platform, Verizon is adding more capabilities to its own BlackBerry devices that will run on the PBX servers. For example, its BlackBerries will add a pull-down menus for managing a user's devices, something that's already available on its landline phones.

Initially, the new mobile PBX capabilities will be only be available in the U.S., but Verizon says it also has plans for international versions.
